Sometimes, damage or decay gets deep into a tooth and can affect the living, soft ‘pulp’ tissue in the middle. If left unchecked, this can result in severe toothache, an abscess or mean that the tooth has to be removed. Sometimes any infection present can drain itself into the gum, this is known as a sinus (see picture). Root fillings, also known as root canal treatment or Endodontics can eliminate the infection and allow you to keep the tooth.

The process usually takes 2 appointments to complete the procedure but can sometimes be completed in a single visit (depending on the complexity of the case). The appointments are long and can last for up to 90 minutes. You will be numbed up thoroughly and will feel no pain during the procedure. A sheet of plastic (known as a rubber dam) is clipped on to the tooth to isolate it from the rest of your mouth. This rubber dam permits thorough disinfection of the tooth, without contamination from saliva, etc. Occasionally, you may experience some jaw ache after the procedure (as you will have to keep your mouth wide open for most of the procedure). The follow up appointment (usually a few weeks later) will permit the completion of the root canal procedure.

After a root canal, it is often necessary to place a crown on the tooth. We will advise you accordingly prior to commencing the root canal.
